Kupu-Kupu Foundation works on the island of Bali in Indonesia. Indonesia is a country of over 13,000 islands that stretches from Malaysia to Australia. Bali is a popular tourist destination with most of the tourist areas concentrated in the southern portion of the island.
Kupu-Kupu works mainly in the poorer North, Central and Eastern parts of Bali in two regions named Gianyar and Bangli (circled in red on the map above). Families live in very poor conditions and are economically disadvantaged, a reality often missed by most holiday-makers in Bali. Job opportunities are located in Sanur and other well-known tourist hotspots - available to those who live near-by or who can commute from the capital, Denpasaar. Other regions in Bali are remote and isolated leaving many people without access to jobs, schools and health facilities.
