Kupu-Kupu Foundation

Supporting people with disabilities

Kupu-Kupu is the Indonesian word for butterfly. We have chosen it as our name because it symbolises the beautiful people whom we serve and who, with a little love, can escape their cocoons and fly away as butterflies.

2.5 million people subsist on traditional rice farming and work in the tourist industry on the island of Bali. The majority of the island's people are very poor and there is almost no support for handicapped people. Kupu-Kupu Foundation is an established charity providing vital disability services to local people.

Why not stay in our Bali holiday accommodation and have an amazing experience - our holiday accommodation is located close to our Ubud centre and you are very welcome to visit us and meet some of the people whom we help.

Make a difference to the lives of local disabled people in Bali and stay in our traditional Balinese holiday accommodation.

Children with disabilities

Student walking to school with disability caused by polio.

It is not unusual to see a severely handicapped child dragging themselves along the ground with the abilities they have. There are no modifications in houses for disabled children. This life is particularly harsh for children who are from families who cannot deal with the problems of a disabled child.

Most children with disabilities sadly never go to school. But we provide a centre where children and young adults with disabilities come to a welcoming environment and we support them in their studies. Our school buses pick up students in the morning and drop them back to their houses after school, and some students who live near enough can walk.

Improving lives

Kupu-Kupu Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation and we aim to improve the lives of children, adolescents and adults with disabilities on the island of Bali, Indonesia.

Staff and students sitting on a pathway in Kupu-Kupu Ubud with a box of colouring pens and paper. We are totally privately-funded and are always greatly in need of funds to keep our operations going. Please read about our work and help us in any way you can. Even a little can make a big difference!

"Overcoming poverty is not a gesture of charity. It is an act of justice. It is the protection of a fundamental human right, the right to dignity and a decent life."
